Forge, a personal operating system

A private tool that one person uses to run their work, learning, training and practice. It is not a product, it is not open to sign ups, and it is still being built.

Status: in development, closed to users. Forge is a single user application built by Dante St James for their own use. There is no sign up, no waiting list and no way to create an account. The sign in page exists for the one account that already exists. Nothing on this site is offered as a service to anyone else.

What the application does

Forge is a self hosted workspace that keeps one person's commitments, notes and records in a single place, and helps them decide what to do with a day. It has four parts, which share one underlying system.

  • Work. Saved reading, drafts and writing tools, plus the day's tasks and recurring commitments.
  • Mind. Learning goals broken into ordered lessons, taught and tested in conversation inside the app.
  • Body. A hand written training log, with steps, sleep and resting heart rate read from the user's own Google Health account so they do not have to be typed.
  • Spirit. A practice and study log, with a private journal.

Across all four it answers one question: where did the time actually go, measured against what the person said mattered to them. It reads their calendar to know what a day already holds, and can put a task into a free gap in that calendar when asked.

Why it asks for access to Google data

Forge is useless without knowing what a day already looks like, so it reads the account owner's own Google Calendar and, optionally, their own Google Health data. It never reads anyone else's. Each permission is used for exactly one purpose.

Google Calendar
Read: to show the day, find free gaps, and plan around meetings and travel. Write: only to add an event the user has explicitly asked to schedule, and to remove one they ask to remove. It never edits or deletes an event it did not create.
Google Health, activity and fitness
Read only. Daily step counts and active minutes, shown alongside the training log.
Google Health, sleep
Read only. Nightly sleep duration, shown as a fortnightly trend.
Google Health, metrics and measurements
Read only. Resting heart rate, shown as a fortnightly trend.

Connecting Google Health is optional. The application works without it, and disconnecting it at any time stops all further access.

Where the data goes

Nowhere. Forge runs on a single server rented by Clickstarter in Australia, and the data stays in its database on that server. It is not sold, not shared, not used for advertising, and not used to train any machine learning model. There is no analytics, no tracking and no third party scripts on this page.

The full detail, including how long things are kept and how to have them deleted, is in the privacy policy.

Who it is for

One person: Dante St James, who runs Clickstarter in Australia and teaches small business owners for a living. It was built to solve their own problem, and it has one user by design.

It may open to other people one day. If that ever happens it will be announced here first, and this page will stop saying what it says now.
